Ceci’s Story
Ceci walks through the doors of the Women's Life Care Center alone. Despite the business of the day, the Center staff have agreed to provide an after-hours appointment, allowing Ceci to receive services in a calm, quiet environment. A familiar face — she visited years ago with her first child — she carries herself differently this time. Her eyes scan the room nervously, and her shoulders tense under the weight of a life unraveling. Living paycheck to paycheck, navigating the end of her marriage, and searching for a new home for herself and her young child, Ceci admits she can barely see past tomorrow.
She sits down with a client advocate and begins to talk. Her words come quickly, tumbling over one another. She is going through a divorce. She needs a new place to live. She was on birth control — she had no intention of getting pregnant. And yet, here she is: pregnant, overwhelmed, and feeling utterly alone. Ceci believes deeply that abortion is wrong, but the fear of raising two children on her own pushes her toward considering it anyway. The walls of her circumstances close in around her, and she cannot find a way out.
For months, Ceci ignores the possibility. She avoids taking a pregnancy test, hoping the problem will disappear. When the test confirms what she fears, she focuses only on finding out how far along she is — telling herself that an abortion is the only practical answer. Her anxiety makes it nearly impossible to slow down, breathe, and listen to her own heart. The center gives her that space.
Advocates sit with her, walk through her options, and connect her with community housing resources. They listen without judgment. Then Ceci sees the ultrasound. Her baby — already 18 weeks — moves on the screen, and something shifts inside her. She exhales. She signs up for the parenting program, secures access to material supplies, and begins to lean into the support her separated husband has offered. For the first time, she sees not just the challenges ahead, but the gifts: a sibling for her child, a co-parent committed to showing up, and a community standing beside her.
