A Heartbeat Changes Everything - Avery’s Story
A young woman in her early twenties entered the center seeking a pregnancy test and ultrasound to confirm her pregnancy and determine how far along she was. She introduced herself as Avery. Her expression revealed a mix of emotions as she faced difficult decisions. Her boyfriend, several years older, accompanied her. He remained polite, quiet, and attentive.
During intake, she met privately with an advocate and quickly stated that she intended to have an abortion. Despite her words, her expression suggested uncertainty. When the advocate asked about her future, she shared that she wanted children someday but felt the timing was wrong. She worried they were not financially prepared.
During the ultrasound, her boyfriend showed care and concern through his words and actions. The team could not get a clear image of the baby, so they scheduled a follow-up appointment. Afterward, the advocate met with the couple. At Avery’s request, they provided a prenatal clinic list. When asked if they had questions, her boyfriend lowered his head and sighed. Encouraged to speak, he paused, then began to cry. He said he wanted to have the baby.
The young woman gently comforted him. The advocate affirmed his support and encouraged her to explore the fears holding her back. They agreed to return for the follow-up visit.
Two weeks later, they came back. This time, the ultrasound showed the baby and a heartbeat. Both watched with visible emotion. Afterward, she shared that she had reflected and realized she wanted to be a mother. However, she feared telling her own mother and grandmother, who had not been positive influences.
They discussed the strong support available from her boyfriend and his family, as well as her ability to choose a different path as a parent. Her demeanor softened, and she smiled. The couple eagerly signed up for parenting education.
Before leaving, she expressed deep gratitude. She said she needed space to process her fears and feel supported. She hugged the staff and shared that she planned to continue the pregnancy and felt excited to become a mother.
